Such events tend to be less polarizing than massive marches and demonstrations, said Louis DeSipio, a political-science professor at the University of California-Irvine. “They are less confrontational in that they disrupt the average person less,” he said. “Marches do put the issue more centrally into the eye of the average person, and certainly some share of the American public is antagonized by the idea of people with no formal rights in the society making demands on the society.”
